  • Dr. Wiernik has established The Familial Hematological Malignancy Research Project. The study is investing families with two or more family members diagnosed with hematological ( blood ) malignancies. The goal of this study is to determine if a genetic basis exists for these hematological malignancies. There is no cost to any participant enrolled in the Familial Hematological Disorders Research Study. Dr. Wiernik hopes to enroll, investigate and analyze 1,000 or more families. They have studied a few hundred families already.
  • The Cancer Research Foundation began a new study called Kidney Cancer Tissue Bank and Future Clinical Research Protocol at Our lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx. The main purpose of this study is to collect Renal Cell Cancer specimens and blood samples from our patients for use in developing predictors of disease activity. Such research will help to improve our understanding of this disease, develop better treatment options, and identify genetic factors that will help diagnose and treat Kidney Cancer. This research project is headed by Dr. Janice P. Dutcher.
